Actively Hating Things is Fun! Unrelated: Have You Tried Enjoying Stuff?
It's this new thing I'm trying
As a recovering full time hater, I gotta tell you that being easy to please and lowering your standards for enjoyment is actually quite rewarding. Who’s to say that the 2016 CW Romantasy series you just started should’ve been excluded from the Emmys?? Because you know what I am? Captivated. Mad Men couldn’t do that for me (but happy for you if it did!).
Sure, you could Fran Lebowitz your way through life, but have you ever cracked open a self-published minotaur erotica book while you shoved a Cheeze-It Crunch Wrap down your gullet? Sated in many ways. Lots of sizes and shapes of anatomy come together in a pure form of creativity lost on most intellectual minds. Just saying! Your personal, subjective opinion is valid and also not better than mine (and vice versa).
Poop jokes can be a lot of fun and Star Wars is almost always cool even if it falls a little flat of the canon you have written in the sacred texts tattooed on your heart.
Intermission: Some “bad” media I’ve recently consumed:
Roswell, New Mexico (it’s not good at all)
A Family Affair (I beg you not to watch this)
Through My Window Trilogy (10 out of 10 Oscar worthy)
Maxton Hall (If a man EVER bossed me around irl I would call the police)
The Tearsmith (just a quick reminder that I am 35 years old)
I love to base my entire personality on the highest of lifted brow indie bookstore purchased literary fiction that I dampen the pages of with my tears. I admit I want people to think I’m interesting and smart. But also! Vampire television programs and period pieces with minor (sexually attractive) characters are quite pleasurable to rearrange your whole life around.
[Aside: Have you ever heard of Edward Bluemel? Look him up, thank me later.]
I do feel that truly personal, individualized opinions are lost to the online groupthink world. It’s important to log off and have them (an edict for me, mostly). And there are lots of things on planet earth that matter enough to get heated over—unclear if Disney Adults make the list. However, I am hereby granting you permission to be frivolous in your interests because joy is not finite.
There’s really no point here but to urge yourself to practice opening your heart to a bit of childlike wonder, if possible. No worries, if not! We can also not like the same things. What’s most important is that you are always nice to me. And respect the quality of my tastes. Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Lane
